Poverty Internationally:

Relative poverty refers to a standard which is defined by terms of society in which an individual lives, which therefore differs between countries, for example in third world countries poverty can be based on not having money to pay the electricity bill, where in other countries poverty can be going days without food. It is very important to recognise that these issues are both classified as being poor. International poverty by definition is  poverty all around the world. The geography behind this is different depending on which country is in context. We have already talked about Poverty nationally (Ireland), we have also discussed the geography of poverty. we have not however talked about how it effects everywhere across the world. From Hong Kong to Cyprus there is always people struggling with a low standard of living. This occurs from lack of education or exploitation of land. There is many reasons as to why these things happen, stay tuned for all that. But for now lets discuss the places poverty effects the most.

Poverty nationally:

As I have mentioned in previous posts when people think "poverty," the automatically imagine a small child in Africa starving. Of course that's no fault of their own, and don't get me wrong its important that their is awareness out their but we also need to concentrate on the issues around us. I live in Dublin, Ireland. A city known for its culture yet we have a massive homeless crisis with rising numbers of homeless people each year. its so important that when we are being charitable we think of the people in our own country. House prices are ridiculous in this country making it nearly impossible to get a mortgage. Many people struggle with this and are forced to live in the streets. If you visit Ireland and walk around the city centre of Dublin you will notice the amount of homeless people of the footpaths.

There are so many ways in which we can tackle these issues. The first being that you can donate anything unwanted to organisations such as the Simon Community or various soup kitchens around city and towns.

Poverty in Ireland is admittedly much better then other countries, it surprisingly derives from different issues. The geography behind poverty in Ireland comes from economic issues quite like third world countries, however it comes from Ireland owing other countries huge amounts of money from loans and other aids. This debt caused a rise in taxes, rise in demand for land and companies not being able to afford employing workers. This caused a drop in employment stripping families of their homes and causing many people to move to the streets. It is so important that you look into the people in and around you.

The Geography Behind Poverty:

From my research and general education through school curriculum and media I have come to the understanding that poverty is having no food or money. It is true that these things are a big part of this epidemic but there is also other ways of being "poor." Poverty can be having no home, no money, no food or drink and other cases no clothes etc. In other words poverty is a low standard of living.

From various research I learnt that the geography behind poverty is quite understanding. I learnt that countries with a higher percentage of poverty are those which are exploited by third world countries for their land or goods. so to get an understanding of this imagine you were born in brazil, your father is a coffee farmer and doesn't get paid fairly by big corporations. you live a low standard of life because your father struggles to support your family. You do not get a sufficient education so you carry on your fathers business, falling into the same trap he suffered, you then have a family of your own and struggle to support them creating an endless cycle of poverty that can only be broken by people who don't even know you exist. Hopefully from this blog I can shed some light on these issues and maybe in the future somebody will make better efforts like big brands who do promote fair trade.

Hello, my name is Hazel and this is my blog on poverty.

This blog is going to discuss the different forms of poverty: locally, nationally, and internationally. I chose this particular topic because poverty is something that happens everywhere and is quite a taboo topic, of course we see the adds on TV for hunger and poverty but I feel as if nobody fully understand the extent of this epidemic. In this blog I am going to define poverty and talk about the geography behind it all. I am not jumping on here and writing everything in stone, I am just trying to help shed some light on serious issues.

Poverty:

By definition Poverty is the state of being extremely poor, however I feel as if it is much morer then that, in this discussion I am going to talk about the geography behind poverty. In more simple terms: the foundation is which poverty is based. I am writing this post as an introduction into the topic and to set up the rest of my findings and opinions in an appropriate manner. As somebody who has an interest in poverty and humanitarian ideals I chose this topic as its something I feel passionate about.
